Finding Balance: How Mental Health First Aid Training Helped Me Navigate Stress and Uncertainty

Maintaining mental well-being can feel daunting in a world that seems to move faster every day and is filled with endless responsibilities, deadlines, and uncertainties. As someone who has spent years supporting others in crisis, both professionally and as a volunteer, I understand the importance of mental health care—and yet, like many people, I still have moments when stress and uncertainty feel overwhelming.

One of the most transformative tools that has helped me find balance during these times is Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training. Initially, I became an MHFA instructor to help others, but what I didn’t expect was how much the training would impact my own life. It equipped me with skills not only to support those around me but also better to navigate my own stress and mental health challenges.

In this blog, I want to share how MHFA training has helped me cope with stress and uncertainty and how it can be a valuable tool for anyone seeking balance in their own life. What is Mental Health First Aid?

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a training program that teaches people how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental health challenges or crises. Like traditional first aid, MHFA is designed to provide immediate, compassionate support to someone in distress until professional help can be accessed. The program covers various skills, from recognizing symptoms of common mental health issues to offering initial support and guiding someone toward appropriate help.

The goal of MHFA isn’t to turn participants into therapists but to give them the knowledge and confidence to provide meaningful support in everyday situations and moments of crisis. For me, the training offered valuable insights not only into helping others but also into understanding and managing my mental health.

How MHFA Helped Me Find Balance

The tools and techniques I learned through MHFA training have been invaluable in helping me maintain emotional balance, especially in times of stress and uncertainty. Here are a few key ways MHFA has impacted my own life:

  1. Recognizing and Naming Emotions
    One of the foundational aspects of MHFA is learning to recognize and identify emotions, both in yourself and others. In my experience, simply naming what I’m feeling—whether it’s stress, anxiety, frustration, or sadness—has been incredibly grounding. Naming emotions helps me process them rather than letting them build up or overwhelm me.
    I pause and acknowledge my feelings when in a particularly stressful situation. “I’m feeling anxious about this deadline,” or “I’m frustrated by this unexpected change.” Recognizing these emotions doesn’t make them disappear, but it does help me feel more in control, reminding me that emotions are temporary and manageable.
  2. Practicing Active Listening—With Myself
    One of the core skills taught in MHFA is active listening—paying full attention to someone without judgment or interruption. While this is a powerful tool for supporting others, I’ve found that it can also be beneficial when applied to myself.
    In moments of stress, I practice “listening” to my thoughts and feelings without judgment. Rather than brushing aside my concerns or immediately trying to solve them, I allow myself to sit with them, listen, and understand. This self-compassionate approach helps me process difficult emotions more healthily, making it easier to move forward.
  3. Using Grounding Techniques for Stress Management
    MHFA training includes various grounding techniques that can help de-escalate moments of intense stress or anxiety. One technique that’s been particularly helpful for me is the “5-4-3-2-1” exercise, which involves engaging your five senses to bring you back to the present moment. When I feel overwhelmed, I focus on:

    • Five things I can see
    • Four things I can touch
    • Three things I can hear
    • Two things I can smell
    • One thing I can taste
  4. This exercise helps me free myself from anxious thoughts and reconnect with the present. By grounding myself in what’s immediately around me, I can reduce the intensity of my stress and approach challenges with a clearer mind.
  5. Embracing the Value of Self-Care
    MHFA training emphasizes the importance of self-care, not just for those in crisis, but for everyone involved. To effectively support others, we must first take care of ourselves. This concept has encouraged me to prioritize self-care, especially during stressful times.
    Self-care looks different for everyone, but for me, it often involves setting aside time for activities that recharge me, such as reading, spending time outdoors, and practicing mindfulness meditation. Making self-care a non-negotiable part of my routine, I can better maintain balance and resilience, even in challenging times.
  6. Understanding the Importance of Boundaries
    MHFA has taught me the importance of setting and respecting boundaries with others and myself. In high-stress periods, taking on more than I can handle or neglecting my needs in favor of others can be tempting. However, MHFA training has shown me that boundaries are essential for sustainable support.
    I’ve learned to set clear limits on my time and energy, recognizing that I can’t be everything to everyone. This might mean saying no to additional responsibilities when overwhelmed or letting others know when I need time to recharge. Setting boundaries has been crucial for maintaining my mental health and ensuring that I can support others effectively.

MHFA training has provided me with tools that have become invaluable in my life, but these tools are not limited to professionals or mental health advocates. They’re accessible to anyone who wants to build resilience, deepen their understanding of mental health, and become a supportive presence for those around them.     Effective communication is a crucial aspect of MHFA, and these skills apply to all areas of life. MHFA teaches us to listen actively, respond empathetically, and provide non-judgmental support.     Mental health challenges are common, and many of us know someone who is struggling. MHFA training provides the knowledge and confidence to support others without feeling overwhelmed or unsure what to say. By learning practical tools for crises, we become more capable allies and advocates for mental health.

    MHFA training plays a crucial role in reducing mental health stigma by normalizing conversations around mental well-being. It encourages us to view mental health challenges as a part of life rather than something to be hidden or ashamed of. This shift in perspective can have a ripple effect, fostering a more supportive and accepting community environment.

    Imagine a world where everyone has basic mental health first aid skills—where people understand how to support each other in times of need, where stigma is minimized, and where mental health is a priority for all. Becoming a Mental Health First Aid instructor has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, not only because of its impact on others but also because of its positive impact on my own mental health. The skills I’ve gained through MHFA have given me a stronger foundation for managing stress, maintaining balance, and fostering resilience—even in challenging times.
